La importancia del motor a vapor en la historia
Hasta su aparición y posterior difusión a niveles y aplicaciones casi ilimitadas, el hombre sólo había contado con la energía suministrada por la naturaleza: el viento y el agua, que podían accionar molinos y ruedas hidráulicas, y la fuerza muscular de personas o de animales.
El primer motor a vapor práctico fue diseñado e instalado por Thomas Newcomen en Inglaterra. Producía un movimiento alternativo que accionaba una bomba, utilizada para extraer el agua que inundaba las galerías subterráneas de las minas de carbón y de estaño. Poco después, una mejora del diseño permitió lograr un movimiento rotativo, más apto para aplicaciones generales.
Pronto seguirían innumerables perfeccionamientos que hicieron al motor a vapor cada vez más compacto, eficiente y, por supuesto, imprescindible donde se requiriese disponer de energía mecánica. Era fundamental en la industria para activar las máquinas. Los trenes y los barcos movidos a vapor acortaron distancias y acercaron ciudades y países. Es imposible evaluar en toda su magnitud la influencia que esta fuente de energía tuvo en la historia de la humanidad.
Y conservó este rol de privilegio más de un siglo, hasta que la aparición del motor a explosión y el motor eléctrico produjeron su gradual ocaso.
La realización de los modelos
La etapa previa a la construcción del modelo elegido es la recopilación de toda la información posible acerca del tema, rastreando en libros, revistas, e Internet.
Con esa información, y una vez adoptada una escala adecuada según el tamaño pretendido del modelo terminado, lo dibujo utilizando un programa de modelado en 3D. Pocas veces dispongo de planos preexistentes, y aún en estos casos es normal que los modifique, por ejemplo cambiando la escala, o aspectos del diseño.
Para dibujar cada parte necesito determinar sus dimensiones y proporciones, lo que generalmente hago analizando fotos, croquis, a veces trabajando directamente en la pantalla de la PC, y utilizando algún valor conocido para establecer una escala de referencia. Así puedo estimar con exactitud razonable otras dimensiones.
Un buen ejemplo es el caso de Le Fardier, del que encontré muchos datos (dimensiones generales, diámetro de ruedas, etc.). Utilizando una foto del prototipo conservado en París que es prácticamente una vista en alzado, pude definir el tamaño de otras partes, y junto con los detalles que se observan en muchas otras fotos, intenté lograr el mayor realismo posible en el modelo final.
Concluido el diseño, dibujo e imprimo los planos de las piezas para poder llevarlos al taller. Recién ahora puedo comenzar la fabricación del modelo: tornear, fresar, perforar cada componente, ensamblar las partes y probar el funcionamiento. Es hora de elegir el próximo proyecto.
